George General d’Auto Reparation

This awkwardly named abandoned garage is found on the corner of Marie-Anne and St-Dominique. It offers therefore two walls for display, one on each of those two streets. It has been abandoned for a number of years now. It was put up for sale around 2007-2008 but apparently a buyer was never found. Expectedly, as it fell in a state of abandonment, it was gradually taken over by graffiti and tags. Then wheatpaste and sticker artists took over, making it one of the neighbourhood’s biggest open-air gallery for these artforms.

Photos of the garage in the spring of 2012 and the summer of 2014 can be viewed in the gallery below. In 2012 the garage only had a bit of graffiti and a few wheatpastes (by Stikki Peaches in this particular photo) while by 2014 most of its available surface had been taken over. New pieces appear on it every week from spring to autumn.

Ce garage abandonné au nom bizarre est localisé au coin des rues Marie-Anne et St-Dominique, offrant conséquemment deux murs pour affichage. Il est fermé depuis plusieurs années. Il a été mis en vente vers 2007-2008, mais de toute évidence aucun acheteur ne s’y est intéressé. Il a été laissé à l’abandon et son état s’est graduellement détérioré. Avec la détérioration sont d’abord apparus les graffitis et les tags. Les artistes s’adonnant aux collages et autocollants sont ensuite arrivés en masse et en ont fait une de leur galleries préférées dans le quartier.

Des photos du garage prises au printemps 2012 et à l’été 2014 sont présentées en tête de la gallerie ci-dessous. On peut voir comment la situation a changé en deux ans: en 2012 on y trouvait des graffitis et quelques wheatpastes (en l’occurrence Stikki Peaches sur cette photo) mais en 2014 presque toute la surface disponible est utilisée. De nouvelles oeuvres y apparaissent à chaque semaine du printemps à l’automne.

hello With this first blog post I feel that my intentions must be defined. As expressed in the about section (suggested reading!), my first motivation is to share my passion for the Montreal graffiti and street art scenes, but I also aim to increase exposure for its writers and artists, including the new and lesser known ones, present new creations and, given the ephemeral nature or public art, document lost ones.

Wall2Wall Montreal will focus on artists who are based in Montreal or have left a significant mark here. When people think of public art, what comes to mind first and foremost are the big murals. By their sheer size and colours, these works impose themselves on passersby, including those who are generally indifferent to art. But there is so much more to public art than murals. There are also wheatpastes and other smaller paste-ups, stickers, stencils, installations, and especially graffiti which will be given a special place here.

Most posts will fit into one of the following categories:

spotlights on the writers and artists
open-air galleries, those hot spots in town for great street art and graffiti
demolished abandoned buildings that have hosted good graffiti
themes and subjects popular with our creators

Finally, because art is a personal experience, this blog will aim to be as objective as possible and avoid criticism or negative value judgements.

Comme premier article je me dois de définir mes intentions pour ce blogue. Tel qu’exprimé dans la section à propos (lecture fortement recommandée!), mes buts premiers avec ce blogue sont de partager ma passion pour la scène montréalaise du graffiti et du street art, d’accroître la visibilité de ses artistes et d’attirer l’attention sur ses créateurs émergents, ainsi que de présenter les nouvelles oeuvres et, étant donné le coté éphémère de l’art urbain, documenter les oeuvres qui ont été perdues.

Montréal mur-à-mur s’intéressera principalement aux artistes montréalais ainsi qu’aux créateurs d’ailleurs qui ont laissé leur marque à Montréal. Quand on pense art public, ce qui vient d’abord à l’esprit ce sont les grandes murales. De par leur taille et leurs vives couleurs ces oeuvres imposent leur présence aux passants, incluant ceux qui sont généralement indifférents à l’art. Mais il y a bien plus à l’art public que les murales. Il y a aussi les wheatpastes (collages), les autocollants, les installations, les pochoirs et surtout le graffiti qui occupera une place prépondérante à cette adresse.

La plupart des articles feront partie de l’une ou l’autre des catégories suivantes:

profils d’artistes figuratifs et de graffiti
galleries à ciel ouvert, ces points névralgiques où on peut trouver une concentration d’oeuvres intéressantes
édifices abandonnés ayant hébergé du graffiti de qualité
divers thèmes et sujets populaires chez nos artistes

Enfin, puisque l’art sous toutes ses formes est une expérience personnelle, ce blogue se voudra autant que possible objectif, sans critique ou jugement de valeur négatif.

Under Pressure Festival

The Under Pressure festival brings together graffiti and street artists with DJs, dance crews, B-boys and B-girls and skaters in one big interdisciplinary event. The official festival zone is Ste-Catherine and Boisbriand streets between St-Dominique and Ste-Elisabeth, including cross streets.

For more information on the festival’s programme, indoors exhibits, concerts and shows, etc, check out the Under Pressure webpage.

To see the graffiti, murals and installations produced in the context of Under Pressure, pick a year from the menu below. The year 2022 is not offered in the menu as there was no festival that year.

Le festival Under Pressure est un événement artistique multidisciplinaire réunissant des graffeurs et autres artistes de rue avec des DJs, des breakdancers, des skaters, etc. La zone officielle du festival couvre les rues Ste-Catherine et Boisbriand entre St-Dominique et Ste-Elisabeth, incluant les rues transversales.
