Mateo

Mateo – real name Mathieu Bories – was born in France but has left a trail of murals around the world, particularly in Latin America as well as in Montreal where he has come to study. His work is recognizable by the integration of stencilled elements, particularly to create textures and motifs. His Montreal catalogue includes a good share of walls created for the program Tandem from the Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie borough.

The photo gallery below only features exterior work done in Montreal. To see what Mateo has created elsewhere or in interior settings, or to see the evolution of his Montreal murals, you can check out mathieubories.com or his Instagram and Facebook pages. This article at StoriesMTL will tell you a bit more about the artist himself. Also very interesting is this photo interview for 7H42.com.

Inspired by the success of his paintings on patterned carpets which he sells in galleries, Mateo developed these streets versions on strips of wallpaper.

New street art June-July 2015 part 2

Here’s a gallery of new street art that has appeared in the streets and alleys of Montreal during July 2015, with a few leftovers from June. Many murals and mural pieces were created over the past few weeks, and a lot of wheatpastes were put up. However, there has a been a surprisingly small amount of new stickers on traffic signs and other ‘urban furniture’. This is presumably because the city has been more pro-active in removing stickers lately, but also because our most active slappers are out of town or busy with personal projects. Again, there was enough graffiti to justify a separate post which will be published within the coming week.

Stay tuned for some very big murals which should be completed in time for my next ‘new works’ post. Meanwhile, you can follow me on Instagram and view the progress of these murals, or see photos of the best of new street art as soon as I discover it.

wheatpastes and large paste-ups

We were spoiled in July by treats from three of this city’s major pasting artists: Stikki Peaches, Miss Me and Turtle Caps. All three had been relatively quiet in Montreal so far this year. Miss Me returned with a mix of older and new designs. The older ones were offered in new colours while the new designs were picked from the work she had created for her “Saints Of Soul” indoors expo last winter. Turtle Caps returned with mostly older designs, but the ones shown below were new to Montreal, at least in these formats.

To mark the departure of El Moot Moot, I have put together this anthology of the work he created while in Montreal. In just slightly more than four months this French artist has left an incredible amount of art in the streets and alleys of our city. Not only was he prolific, but he has left his mark from the Old Port to Villeray, from St-Henri to Hochelaga, and probably beyond. Rarely have I seen an artist take over this city with such speed and presence.

My first encounter with El Moot Moot’s work took place in late February when I found his first stickers here and there in centre-sud and the Quartier des Spectacles. Within a week I started finding small paste-ups. I must admit I wasn’t that impressed at first with the little creature with its arms in the air and its tongue sticking out. I started finding it drawn or painted on walls in early March even though there was still snow on the ground and most of our local artists had not yet gone back to the streets. As Spring (slowly) set in and the weather warmed up, so did my appreciation of the little fella. By the time I found the first ‘mural’ in mid-May I was hooked. In his last month in Montreal El Moot Moot had started to collaborate with some of our locals, namely Waxhead. The pair worked side by side on a few mural pieces and even had some stickers printed featuring their characters together.

The image gallery below shows just a fraction of what El Moot Moot has left on our streets. There isn’t much more online to be found about this artist, but a quick search on the internet should lead you to work done outside Montreal, namely in Rennes and Toulouse.

New street art June-July 2015

This post features works which appeared in the streets of Montreal in June and the first week of July 2015 (and that I was lucky enough to catch, of course). Our artists have been very busy and a lot of others were in town for Mural Festival, so this post is another big one! Graffiti was left out, there’s so much of it that it deserves its own separate post.

Many new occurrences of the Phantom Cat by Jmoe have popped up here and there in central Montreal.

One more by the Phantom Cat aka Jmoe.

This is actually from slightly earlier than the period covered within this blog post, but I thought it was a one-off joke until I found more. Artist unknown.

More by the above unidentified artist.

wheatpastes

A giant new piece by Stikki Peaches in the fashion district.

Stikki Peaches with Dain from NYC in Plateau/Mile End.

Turtle Caps is back in action. The piece on the left appears to be new, at least for Montreal, while the other one is not. Many other previously seen designs by this artist have been pasted around the Plateau and Mile End in the same week.

Finally some new Miss Me, with Turtle Caps in Mile End.

Garbage Beauty

July 1st is moving day in Montreal, which means a lot of old furniture is left on the sidewalks and a lot more opportunities there are for Garbage Beauty to do their thing. Below is just a small fraction of what they did in our streets in the past few weeks. Their best work does not remain outside very long before it gets picked up and given a new home (or the same home from whence it came!).

Peru143

Peru143 is known for his murals and has contributed to projects for En Masse. He sometimes works within Wastoids, an unofficial ‘crew’ featuring his friends Cabin aka Cabe, Faser and Anode. For more information and photos of Peru143’s art, check out Peru143.com and his Instagram page. Older material is still found at his apparently abandoned Flickr and WordPress pages.

New stickers May-June 2015

There has been so much new work in Montreal since my last ‘new works’ installment that I must break this one into differents posts. The gallery below only features new stickers and small paste-ups. For other media, see recents posts about the 2015 edition of Mural Festival, new painted works, new pasted works and new graffiti.

You’ll notice in the image gallery below a lot of stickers by unidentified artists or by unfamiliar names. This is presumably due to the amount of artists from other cities who were in town to check out the Mural Festival.

There has been so much new work since my last ‘new works’ installment that I must break this one into differents posts. The gallery below only features wheatpastes and larger paste-ups. Coming up very soon is a post presenting new stickers. Already published are posts about the 2015 edition of Mural Festival, new painted works and new graffiti.
