El Moot Moot

To mark the departure of El Moot Moot, I have put together this anthology of the work he created while in Montreal. In just slightly more than four months this French artist has left an incredible amount of art in the streets and alleys of our city. Not only was he prolific, but he has left his mark from the Old Port to Villeray, from St-Henri to Hochelaga, and probably beyond. Rarely have I seen an artist take over this city with such speed and presence.

My first encounter with El Moot Moot’s work took place in late February when I found his first stickers here and there in centre-sud and the Quartier des Spectacles. Within a week I started finding small paste-ups. I must admit I wasn’t that impressed at first with the little creature with its arms in the air and its tongue sticking out. I started finding it drawn or painted on walls in early March even though there was still snow on the ground and most of our local artists had not yet gone back to the streets. As Spring (slowly) set in and the weather warmed up, so did my appreciation of the little fella. By the time I found the first ‘mural’ in mid-May I was hooked. In his last month in Montreal El Moot Moot had started to collaborate with some of our locals, namely Waxhead. The pair worked side by side on a few mural pieces and even had some stickers printed featuring their characters together.

The image gallery below shows just a fraction of what El Moot Moot has left on our streets. There isn’t much more online to be found about this artist, but a quick search on the internet should lead you to work done outside Montreal, namely in Rennes and Toulouse.

New street art June-July 2015

This post features works which appeared in the streets of Montreal in June and the first week of July 2015 (and that I was lucky enough to catch, of course). Our artists have been very busy and a lot of others were in town for Mural Festival, so this post is another big one! Graffiti was left out, there’s so much of it that it deserves its own separate post.

Many new occurrences of the Phantom Cat by Jmoe have popped up here and there in central Montreal.

wood-ups, wood cut-outs

Huge wood cut-out created by XRAY for the MTL En Arts event. This piece was interactive as people would mount the skateboard to be photographed as if they were being pulled by the revving ship.

Another one by Starkey, this one in alley between St-Denis and Drolet.

Unidentified artist over wooden piece.

Garbage Beauty

July 1st is moving day in Montreal, which means a lot of old furniture is left on the sidewalks and a lot more opportunities there are for Garbage Beauty to do their thing. Below is just a small fraction of what they did in our streets in the past few weeks. Their best work does not remain outside very long before it gets picked up and given a new home (or the same home from whence it came!).

Peru143

Peru143 is known for his murals and has contributed to projects for En Masse. He sometimes works within Wastoids, an unofficial ‘crew’ featuring his friends Cabin aka Cabe, Faser and Anode. For more information and photos of Peru143’s art, check out Peru143.com and his Instagram page. Older material is still found at his apparently abandoned Flickr and WordPress pages.

New stickers May-June 2015

There has been so much new work in Montreal since my last ‘new works’ installment that I must break this one into differents posts. The gallery below only features new stickers and small paste-ups. For other media, see recents posts about the 2015 edition of Mural Festival, new painted works, new pasted works and new graffiti.

You’ll notice in the image gallery below a lot of stickers by unidentified artists or by unfamiliar names. This is presumably due to the amount of artists from other cities who were in town to check out the Mural Festival.

New pasted works May-June 2015

There has been so much new work since my last ‘new works’ installment that I must break this one into differents posts. The gallery below only features wheatpastes and larger paste-ups. Coming up very soon is a post presenting new stickers. Already published are posts about the 2015 edition of Mural Festival, new painted works and new graffiti.

New painted works May-June 2015

There has been so much new work since my last ‘new works’ installment that I must break this one into differents posts. The gallery below only features murals, smaller painted pieces and stencil pieces. Coming up very soon is a post presenting new stickers and small paste-ups. Already published are posts about the 2015 edition of Mural Festival, new pasted works and new graffiti.

Tava’s Buck 15 Espresso tunnel

Tava was commissionned to paint the walls of the tunnel next to Buck 15 Espresso in Griffintown. The tunnel is quite narrow, which makes it rather difficult to take good photos.

Mural Festival 2015

This article features the new murals created during the 2015 edition of Mural Festival as well as the other temporary art found on the site (St-Laurent between Sherbrooke and Mont-Royal) while it was closed to traffic. Missing is the mural planned by XRAY which was cancelled because of miscommunications with the owner of the wall originally assigned to the artist.

Only four earlier Festival murals have been replaced with new ones this year. These are the sponsored one by Kashink and the 123Klan mural from the 2014 edition, as well as the Omen and Caron murals from the 2013 edition. Last year’s RR & DB wheatpaste mural has since been destroyed by rain and winter; the space was therefore already ready for something new. The Cyrcle mural from 2014 is also gone, that wall had to be rebuilt and it was not yet ready to be covered with a new mural.

You may want to check out this walking tour which I have put together: starting from ‘mural central’ behind the LNDMRK offices, up St-Dominique and the eastern side of St-Laurent then down Clark and the western side of St-Laurent.

Mathieu Connery sidewalk pieces

Mathieu Connery has been painting his abstract pieces on the sidewalks of St-Laurent since the first edition of Mural Festival. This year he came up with two new pieces and restored a few of the ones from last year which had faded. Then, over the weeks following the end of the festival, he transformed a few of the fading 2014 creations.

Information boards / panneaux info

A number of (mostly) local artists covered the backs of the festival’s information boards with their art. These information boards were found interspersed at regular intervals between Mont-Royal and Sherbrooke.
