There isn’t much information on the internet about G.Knight’s (formerly known as Graffiti Knight) street work. His personal and Facebook pages feature almost exclusively his studio work. His Instagram page was the only online site where a significant quantity of his street work could be viewed, but the artist stopped being active in the streets after 2015.

The artist’s favourite media on the streets during his active years were essentially wheatpastes, stickers and stencil. As far as I know he has never done any murals nor smaller painted pieces, other than his Darth Vader stencils.

Il est relativement difficile de trouver le street art de G.Knight (anciennement Graffiti Knight) sur l’internet. Ses pages personnelle et Facebook présentent presque exclusivement son travail de studio. Sa page Instagram était le seul endroit où une quantité significative de son oeuvre publique pouvait être vue, mais l’artiste a arrêté d’être actif dans la rue après 2015.

Pendant sa période active l’artiste semblait préférer les oeuvres collées, que ce soit sous forme de wheatpastes et stickers, ainsi que les stencils. Au meilleur de ma connaissance, il n’est l’auteur d’aucune murale ou oeuvre peinte majeure.

the Darth Vader series

Over the summer of 2014 about 30 stencilled Darth Vader heads appeared here and there on the sidewalks and alley entrances in the Plateau and Mile End. Each head was done in a different colour scheme, enticing some people to play ‘collect them all’ and photograph each one they encountered. Some pieces were signed “Enjoy G Knight”, others not. Coincidence or not, most heads were done at the entrance of alleys where street art could be found, as if the pop culture villain was posted there to protect the contents within. Wheatpastes featuring the same design also appeared on the walls of Plateau End and Mile End at about the same time.

Une trentaine de pochoirs de la tête de Darth Vader sont apparus sur les trottoirs et entrées de ruelle du Plateau et de Mile End au cours de l’été 2014. Chaque tête a été produite avec une combinaison de couleurs différentes, poussant certains amateurs de street art à les collectionner en photo. Certaines de ces pièces étaient signées “Enjoy G Knight”, d’autres non. Ceci pourrait être une coincidence, mais l’artiste semble avoir privilégié des emplacements au sol menant à des endroits où se trouve une quantité intéressante d’art public, comme si le méchant héros y était posté pour garder ce qui se trouvait à proximité. Des affiches collées présentant la même tête de Darth Vader sont apparues sur les murs du même quartier à peu près au même moment.

New York City expat QBNYC is better known in Montreal as Turtle Caps, which is the name of his main creation. It is basically impossible to have walked the streets of this city and never to have noticed Turtle Caps (the creature), a very recognizable 2-legged turtle shell with a spraycan cap as a head. Even though the artist has now returned to New York, Turtle Caps the creature can still be found on stickers and wheatpastes, and spray-painted on many walls around the city.

The contribution of Turtle Caps (the artist) to the Montreal street art scene extends beyond his artistic work, as he has been instrumental in bringing artists from various spheres to work together in the context of events which he organised or curated. He put together the Cabane à sucre secret gallery which had almost 50 of the best Montreal artists – some street, some not – work side by side. He also curated the Montreal installment of the Boundless Brooklyn tour which brought together 20 graffiti writers and street artists from Montreal with 20 from New York City.

Il est pratiquement impossible de n’avoir jamais remarqué Turtle Caps (la créature) dans les rues de Montréal. Bien que l’artiste soit retourné vivre à New York, Turtle Caps la création est toujours présente sur plusieurs stickers et collages, et peinte sur plusieurs murs.

L’impact de Turtle Caps (l’artiste) sur la scène montréalaise du street art s’étend au-delà de sa simple contribution artistique. Il a été impliqué à divers niveaux dans un certain nombre d’événements qui ont mené des artistes de sphères différentes à travailler ensemble. Il est celui qui a mis sur pied la gallerie secrète Cabane à sucre où la crème des artistes street de Montréal a travaillé côte à côte avec des artistes du circuit des galleries. Il a aussi été derrière le volet montréalais de la tournée Boundless Brooklyn qui a mené à une exposition réunissant 20 artistes montréalais avec 20 originaires de New York.
