New graffiti May-June 2016

This post features photos of graffiti pieces created around Montreal during May and June 2016 and that I was lucky enough to catch (I was out of the country for 2 weeks during this period). Some graffiti from May is already featured in the earlier post titled New graffiti May 2016. If you want to see new works as soon as I photograph them, you can follow me on Instagram.

Retrospective of 2015 murals and other painted street art

This image gallery brings together 100 great murals and other painted street art pieces from 2015. It is not necessarily the best of the year because taste is a subjective thing and I was obviously not able to photograph everything. The selection was done partly from my own personal favourites but mostly from those of my followers on Instagram. Of course this list was put together from what I was actually able to photograph, so keep in mind that it may lack some great work that just slipped between the cracks.

The pieces are shown here in alphabetical order of artist/crew name. To ensure that the list wasn’t filled with only work from a few popular artists, I have set a maximum of 4 pieces per artist. Collaborations by two or more artists count as one entry.

One of the great new names on the streets this year was Apok from the Astred Collective. This piece, the first I ever encountered by Apok, was found at the legal graffiti tunnel on de Rouen.

Another one by Apok, this one at the abandoned Montreal Hippodrome. The fascinating thing about this artist, besides being obviously incredibly talented, is that he does figurative work but still operates in the usual graffiti spots. As far as I know most if not all of his street work so far has been done alongside that of graffiti artist Eskro (see Retrospective of 2015 graffiti).

One of the best murals of the year is this huge one done over the summer by Five Eight in the Plateau.

Whilst in town early last summer, Grominator left this piece in Rosemont.

Another early summer production by Grominator, this time in an abandoned building in the South West. Also visible at the bottom of this shot is a piece by Pask.

This building on Savoie was painted by Les Hommes De Lettres to look like a stack of books. The wall beneath the building was done by the same artists last year.

This Mile End garage door was done in early fall by Maliciouz.

Maliciouz also makes it into this year-end list with this piece left at the legal graffiti tunnel on de Rouen.

Mateo‘s main creation this year is this huge mural titled ‘Más’ (‘More’) in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie. See a video of the making of this mural on Vimeo.

Across the street from the huge mural by Mateo above in this list is this other by the same artist. Smaller in size (but still not small), it is titled ‘Menos’ (‘Less’) and acts as a counterpart to the big one.

Mateo also makes this year-end list with this mural in Petite-Patrie. Click on image to better appreciate the mural’s fine details.

This is one of the handful of pieces done by the very obscure but very talented Riode this year.

One more by Riode.

After having contributed one of the most memorable Mural Festival murals in 2014, Seth returned to Montreal to give us this splendid wall on Papineau.

Whilst in town for some commissioned work, Shalak was invited by Turtle Caps to contribute to this delivery/parking space which was being completely redone by a bunch of great artists (from Montreal and elsewhere). This piece of hers is actually one of my very favourite creations of 2015.

This brilliant piece by Bruno Smoky was done at about the same time as the one above it in this list by his Clandestinos partner Shalak.

Bruno Smoky (right) and Cens (left) came up with this back alley mural in early June. Scroll up this page for more by Cens. The latter artist also made it into the Retrospective of 2015 graffiti.

This mindblowing mural by Stare in the Plateau was also the last mural to be completed in Montreal in 2015.

Before starting on the latter mural Stare also spent many weeks working on this masterpiece between the Plateau and the Quartier des Spectacles.

This was a very busy year for Stare. His first major wall of the year was this one near the Quartier des Spectacles.

This Chinatown mural by Stare features a great piece of deconstructed graffiti calligraphy. Stare is the ultimate urban artist, having placed 4 murals into this list as well as 4 pieces into the Retrospective of 2015 graffiti.

This collective wall was done off-Mural Festival by Montreal artist Stela (above and inside door) with the help of visitors Amanda Valdes (bottom left), Didi aka Diana Contreras (left of door) and Lulu107 (top left). Stela has also made it into the Retrospective of 2015 pasted street art.

Tava took a break from doing street art in 2015 but still accepted a few commissioned door pieces, like the three ones found in this year-end list. This particular one was done in the Plateau with the help of Detto.

This is another Tava / Detto collaboration, but in Little Italy.

One more Tava in Little Italy.

This is a piece by Tchug found in a well-hidden spot in upper Plateau.

Axel Void‘s contribution to the 2015 edition of Mural Festival.

Waxhead‘s contribution to the June edition of Chromatic.

This Waxhead mural can be found in a back alley between the Plateau and the McGill ghetto. Scroll up to El Moot Moot above in this list for a collaboration with Waxhead. Waxhead has also placed work into the Retrospective of 2015 pasted street art.

The front window space of this Plateau End house gets redone by Waxhead 2 or 3 times a year. This is one of the 2015 creations. You can see the evolution of this house by clicking on the latter link which will bring you to the Waxhead wall2wallMTL spotlight. The piece above the door and window is an older one by Gawd.

Retrospective of 2015 pasted street art

This image gallery brings together 100 pieces of Montreal street art from 2015 that were created in a studio, then pasted, glued, screwed in or cemented into a public place.

The pieces are shown here in alphabetical order of artist name. To ensure that the list wasn’t filled with only work from a few popular artists, I have set a maximum of 4 pieces per person. Collaborations by two or more artists count as one entry.

This Futur Lasor Now poster spent the 2015 electoral period on the George General d’Auto Reparation.

A few variations on this Futur Lasor Now poster were spotted around central Montreal at the end of summer.

Futur Lasor Now added a bit of life and fun to some electoral boards.

2015 saw this new variation in Futur Lasor Now‘s illuminati sticker series.

‘Self-portrait’ poster by G.Knight.

G.Knight came up with a series of mock currency wheatpastes and stickers in 2015. This large wheatpaste covers the whole corner door of the George General d’Auto Reparation.

Wheatpastes by Gawd and Labrona. Scroll down to ‘Labrona’ for more pasted art by this artist and see the Retrospective of 2015 murals and other painted street art for more by both Gawd and Labrona.

Wheatpaste by Gawd.

Il Flatcha‘s big thing in 2015 was a series of mock permitted/forbidden stickers. I picked these two (I expect the middle one is a real sticker) out of dozens found this year. See more in this earlier post.

Il Flatcha paste-up.

These cat head paste-ups by Kafka were found all over central Montreal during this year’s Mural Festival.

A Kafka poster put up off-Mural Festival.

Another Kafka poster put up off-Mural Festival.

This is one of about a dozen posters put up by Kat over the summer of 2015. Notice the fake brick making it blend into the background, in this alley between St-Laurent and Clark.

Another poster by Kat raising awareness about animal rights. Found in the alley between St-Laurent and Clark.

Another poster by Kat found in the alley between St-Laurent and Clark.

Kat uses real window bars and railings to add to her animal-cruelty message. This one was also found in the alley between St-Laurent and Clark.

Wheatpastes by Labrona and Mono Sourcil found next to UQAM. There is more pasted art by Mono Sourcil solo further down this list and both Labrona and Mono Sourcil have made it into the Retrospective of 2015 murals and other painted street art.

Lily Luciole was not as active on the streets of Montreal in 2015 as before, but both posters by her that I found in 2015 made this year-end list.

That other poster by Lily Luciole.

Clever wheatpaste montage by Toronto’s Lovebot.

This Lovebot wheatpaste was put up at the abandoned Canada Malting Plant. See the Retrospective of 2015 murals and other painted street art for more by Lovebot.

A handful or two of Manyoly wheatpastes popped up around Plateau/Mile End over the summer. This one made this year-end list, but to be honest any of the others could have been picked instead.

Rey Midax returned to the streets this year with a few series of wheatpastes. The best series were these Madonnas, each one ‘dressed’ differently. I picked this particular one for this retrospective but any other could have been shown here as they are all quite impressive when seen in person.

Rey Midax also put up a series of Oscar Wilde wheatpastes over central Montreal and Hochelaga during the autumn.

Rey Midax‘s other series of wheatpastes showed Alan Turing.

A socio-political wheatpaste montage by Mimi who I wish was more active in the streets of Montreal.

During September Miss Me covered this UQAM building with wheatpastes of images and text for Leave Out Violence. As I was out of the country at the time, I have borrowed this photo © Miss Me. Check out this earlier post for more photos of other sides of the building.

Miss Me came up with new Musical Saints wheatpastes during the summer. This one showing Billie Holiday was particularly impressive.

This Marvin Gaye wheatpaste by Miss Me was seen here and there over town, but this particular specimen was picked to be shown in this year-end list because of the brilliant spot the artist found to display it. Photo © PiaMTL.

Miss Me also revisited her Portrait Of A Vandal wheatpaste series in the latter half of the year and came up with new variations. I picked this one to be shown here, but you can see others in this earlier post and this one.

Mono Sourcil put up a series of these pasted cardboard heads this autumn. See also Labrona above in this list for more pasted work by Mono Sourcil. Check out the Retrospective of 2015 murals and other painted street art for more by Mono Sourcil.

This is another one of these pasted cardboard heads by Mono Sourcil. See the whole dozen I was able to photograph in this earlier post.

Wood-up by Mouthful.

Posters signed by Muesli were found here and there in central Montreal following the Charlie Hebdo shooting at the beginning of 2015.

This is one of many stickers put up around Montreal by National Zombi this year. I picked this one to represent the whole series. Many can be seen in this earlier post, and a few more here.

This National Zombi sticker stands out from the rest and is cute enough to make this year-end list!

Pony wheatpaste found in Cité du Multimédia.

Another Pony wheatpaste found in Cité du Multimédia.

This wheatpaste by Le Renard Fou appropriately states “Le Renard Fou est back in town” and marked the beginning of a series of similar and very colourful wheatpastes put up by this artist in Mile End, the Plateau and Petite-Patrie.

Another colourful wheatpaste combo by Le Renard Fou. Also visible on the right are mini-posters by Aura Fallu.

This is one of a few mock-fire alarm stickers by Enzo Sarto.

Enzo Sarto also put up a few wheatpastes whilst in town for Mural Festival. This one made this yearly retrospective, but more can be seen in this earlier post.

Three wheatpastes by Sinister Kid. The central one in this photo is the one making this yearly retrospective, variations were found here and there in central and eastern Montreal.

After working for others like Waxhead, Starkey came up with his own wood-ups this year. This one was found in the alley between St-Denis and Drolet.

Another wood-up by Starkey.

Starkey actually managed to fool quite a few people with these fake doorbells.

This Stela piece is a wheatpaste but the design also exists as a sticker. See the Retrospective of 2015 murals and other painted street art for more by Stela.

This is a collaboration wheatpaste between Stela and Swarm. See below for more by Swarm.

A year-end list would not be complete without some Stikki Peaches wheatpastes.

It was difficult to narrow down Skor‘s impressive input in 2015 to the four ones making this list. It was a nobrainer however when it came to the one above from the abandoned “Jailspot”, it had to make the list.

Top 10 graffiti

Unlike other categories in this Top 100, this one does not strictly feature my ultimate faves of the year. A lot of the graffiti I love I never had a chance to photograph before it disappeared. I also decided not to include in this list graffiti featured in the context of the Under Pressure festival because then the top 10 would almost just be filled with that. So here’s the top 10 one-off Montreal graffiti that I was able to photograph.
