The Mural Festival came to life in 2013 and was an instant success. It draws huge crowds every year and has won great praise and awards. The Festival has since changed the landscape of the St-Laurent axis between Maisonneuve and St-Joseph. Montreal had a great reputation regarding its street art, but now our city is gradually making its place amongst the best destinations in the world for fans of this art form.

The tunnel on de Rouen street, near the Préfontaine metro station in Hochelaga, is one of Montreal’s few legal graffiti walls. Most of the city’s writers and many of its artists have done something there at one time or another. The fact that most of the walls are in a tunnel makes it possible for artists to work in almost any weather condition. From the first days of spring to the last days of autumn there is almost always someone at work in there. During events such as the Jam de Rouen there actually can be up to 20 people working side by side. It’s no surprise then that pieces there don’t have a very long lifespan, from a few hours for the most amateur to a few weeks, sometimes more, for the most respected writers (longer for the pieces done in the higher reaches of the walls or during winter). This means that fans of graffiti who visit this open-air gallery every week or two are treated to a whole new exhibit each time.

Because the amount of works photographed at this legal wall, I have broken down the galleries in sections, over 2 years. See:

Le tunnel de la rue de Rouen près de la station de métro Préfontaine dans Hochelaga est un des quelques murs légaux de Montréal. La majorité des graffeurs montréalais ainsi que plusieurs autres artistes y ont laissé leur marque au cours des années. Puisque les murs sont sous tunnel, il est possible d’y travailler peu importe les conditions météo. On y trouve presque toujours un ou des artistes à l’oeuvre, des premiers jours du printemps jusqu’à la fin de l’automne (et même plus). En fait, pendant la tenue d’événements tels que le Jam de Rouen, on peut y trouver jusqu’à 20 graffeurs à l’oeuvre côte-à-côte. Les oeuvres n’ont conséquemment pas une durée de vie très longue au tunnel de Rouen, de quelques heures pour les créations d’amateurs à quelques semaines et même plus pour celles de graffeurs plus connus et respectés (encore plus longtemps pour les pièces faites en hauteur ou en hiver). Ceci veut dire que l’exposition offerte dans cette galerie publique se renouvelle constamment et peut être revisitée à toutes les semaines ou deux.

A cause de la quantité d’oeuvres photographiées à ce mur légal, j’ai divisé les galleries en sections s’échelonnant sur deux années complètes. Voir:

The Omnipac building, the structure at the corner of Van Horne and Parc, was demolished at the end of 2014 after having been left abandoned for many years. There were plans to turn it into an office building, but it appears those plans were scrapped as the lot is still empty many years after demolition.

After it was closed a long time ago, the 4-storey (plus basement and rooftop) building became the playground of graffiti writers. Fences were put up around it, but getting inside was never really difficult. Hence, over the years, Montreal graffiti artists have left their marks on its walls and columns.

A selection of pieces from the building’s last five years can be viewed in the gallery below, but hundreds more can be found through Google/Images with keywords ‘Omnipac’ and ‘graffiti’.

Vers la fin de 2014 l’Omnipac, l’édifice situé au coin de la rue Van Horne et de l’avenue du Parc, a été démoli après avoir été laissé à l’abandon pendant plusieurs années. L’édifice devait être rénové pour en faire des bureaux, mais ces plans ont dus être abandonnés puisqu’il a complètement été démoli à la fin de l’automne 2014 et le site est toujours vacant plusieurs années plus tard.

Après sa fermeture, les quatre étages (plus le sous-sol et le toit) de l’Omnipac sont rapidement devenus le terrain de jeu des graffeurs. Des clotures ont été érigées tout autour de l’édifice pour en décourager l’accès, mais ceci n’a jamais arrêté les graffeurs de Montréal d’y laisser leur marque sur les murs et colonnes de béton.

The back alley that runs behind the western side of St-Laurent is one of Montreal’s great hotspots for commissioned and non-commissioned street art and graffiti. Two stretches of that alley are particularly interesting: the one from Laurier to St-Viateur (the subject of a separate post) and the one from Duluth to des Pins which is covered here. Some of this city’s greatest artists have left their mark there in the form of big murals, smaller figurative pieces, great graffiti, wheatpastes, stencils and of course the unavoidable stickers.

Each segment of the alley has a different feel, so this post is divided accordingly. Most of the photos were taken between the summers 0f 2014 and 2016. Follow me as we walk down from Duluth to des Pins.

La ruelle se trouvant derrière le coté ouest de la rue St-Laurent est une des meilleures galeries à ciel ouvert à Montréal. Deux portions de cette ruelle sont particulièrement intéressantes: celle comprise entre les rues Laurier et St-Viateur (le sujet d’un différent article) et celle comprise entre Duluth et des Pins, que nous traitons ici. Plusieurs parmi les meilleurs artistes à Montréal y ont laissé leur marque (commandée ou non) sous forme de murales et pièces figuratives de plus petite envergure, graffitis, pièces collées, pochoirs, et évidemment les inévitables autocollants.

The walk down the alley starts at the corner of Duluth. At the entrance of the alley, on Duluth itself, is this house featuring Waxhead and Gawd. Waxhead repaints the house’s facade once or twice a year. Photos below appear in chronological order, two from 2012, one from 2013, two from 2014 and three from 2015.

Notre marche commence au coin de la rue Duluth. A l’entrée de la ruelle, sur Duluth même, se trouve cette maison dont le frontispice a été peint par Waxhead et Gawd. St-Cuthbert

As we cross St-Cuthbert over to the next segment of the alley, contributions to the Mural Festival can be seen on the lateral wall of a St-Laurent pawn shop. Shown below is Scaner and Axe‘s contribution to the 2014 edition of the festival, which replaced the piece done by WZRDS GNG for the 2013 edition (also shown below). Until 2012 this wall only featured tags and uninteresting graffiti.

Roy

Halfway between St-Cuthbert and des Pins, a short perpendicular alley connects our alley to St-Laurent and the beginning of Roy. This segment is therefore visible from St-Laurent and is much cleaner (as in ‘free of tags’) than the back alley.

A mi-chemin entre St-Cuthbert et des Pins, une courte ruelle perpendiculaire permet de rejoindre la rue St-Laurent et le début de Roy. The back alley that runs behind St-Denis and Drolet from Des Pins to Gilford is a great place for street art. Major pieces are particularly concentrated in the segment between Duluth and Roy, which is the reason why I have chosen it as the subject of this installment in the series of posts dedicated to open-air galleries. The highlight for that area is the number of great murals, most of which are apparently not commissioned. Painted works of smaller scale and graffiti are also abundant. Paste-ups and stickers are found in smaller numbers. The gallery below features photos taken from the summer of 2014 to the summer of 2016.

La ruelle qui court derrière les rues St-Denis et Drolet entre Des Pins et Gilford est une des meilleures vitrines de street art non-commandé à Montréal. Le segment entre les rues Duluth et Roy offre une concentration particulière d’oeuvres majeures et c’est pour cette raison qu’il a été choisi comme sujet d’article dans la série dédiée aux galleries à ciel ouvert. On y trouve un grand nombre de murales en apparence non-commandées. On y retrouve aussi abondance d’oeuvres peintes de plus petite envergure ainsi que du graffiti. Les collages et autocollants sont aussi présents, mais en plus petit nombre. La galerie ci-dessous présente des photos prises entre les étés 2014 et 2016.
