Mullins

Behind the building with the legal wall, on Mullins street, is found another wall where graffiti seems to be tolerated. This wall separates a basketball court from a park and is painted on both sides.

One of Montreal’s few legal graffiti walls is situated in the South West neighbourhood, at the St-Charles Arena on Grand Trunk street in Pointe St-Charles. It is therefore usually referred to as the PSC wall (PSC = ‘Pointe St-Charles’), the Grand Trunk wall or the Charlevoix wall because of the proximity of the Charlevoix metro station. It is not as large as the legal graffiti tunnel on de Rouen but the overall quality of the work there is generally superior because there is less petty tagging and fewer amateurs.

Un des murs de graffiti légal de Montréal est situé dans le sud-ouest, à l’Arena St-Charles sur la rue Grand Trunk dans Pointe St-Charles. Il est en conséquence généralement appelé le mur PSC (PSC = ‘Pointe St-Charles’), le mur Grand Trunk ou le mur Charlevoix étant donnée la proximité de la station de métro de ce nom. Ce mur n’est pas aussi large que celui du tunnel de Rouen, mais la qualité des oeuvres qu’on y retrouve est généralement supérieure parce qu’il attire moins d’amateurs et de taggeurs.

the 180 and 210 Ste-Catherine est

The windows of the 180 Ste-Catherine est building were plastered with wheatpastes while the boarded up old windows at the bottom were painted by various street artists from Montreal. The space beneath the four windows on the Hotel de Ville side of 210 Ste-Catherine est across the street were painted by Stadium Art Movement (Jonathan Himsworth).

This article features the new murals created during the 2015 edition of Mural Festival as well as the other temporary art found on the site (St-Laurent between Sherbrooke and Mont-Royal) while it was closed to traffic. Missing is the mural planned by XRAY which was cancelled because of miscommunications with the owner of the wall originally assigned to the artist.

Only four earlier Festival murals have been replaced with new ones this year. These are the sponsored one by Kashink and the 123Klan mural from the 2014 edition, as well as the Omen and Caron murals from the 2013 edition. Last year’s RR & DB wheatpaste mural has since been destroyed by rain and winter; the space was therefore already ready for something new. The Cyrcle mural from 2014 is also gone, that wall had to be rebuilt and it was not yet ready to be covered with a new mural.

Cet article présente les nouvelles murales créées dans le cadre de l’édition 2015 du Festival Mural ainsi que les oeuvres temporaires trouvées sur le site (St-Laurent entre Sherbrooke et Mont-Royal). Il ne manque que la murale de XRAY qui n’a pas été produite suite à une confusion concernant la disponibilité du mur réservé pour cet artiste.

Seulement 4 murales ont été remplacées par de nouvelles cette année: celles de Kashink et du 123 Klan produites dans le cadre de l’édition 2014 ainsi que celles d’Omen et de Caron datant de l’édition 2013. La murale avec collage par RR & DB datant de l’an dernier était déjà détruite par la pluie et l’hiver. Cet espace était donc déjà disponible pour recevoir une nouvelle oeuvre. La murale de Cyrcle produite l’année dernière est aussi disparue, mais elle n’a pas été remplacée, le mur étant en cours de réparation.

Vous pourriez être intéressé par ce tour pédestre que j’ai créé: débutant à la ‘place des murales’ derrière les bureaux de LNDMRK, ensuite vers le nord le long de St-Dominique et le côté est de St-Laurent, puis vers le sud le long de Clark et le côté ouest de St-Laurent.

Mathieu Connery sidewalk pieces

Mathieu Connery has been painting his abstract pieces on the sidewalks of St-Laurent since the first edition of Mural Festival. This year he came up with two new pieces and restored a few of the ones from last year which had faded. Then, over the weeks following the end of the festival, he transformed a few of the fading 2014 creations.

Mathieu Connery a peint un certain nombre de pièces abstraites sur les trottoirs de St-Laurent pour chaque édition du Festival Mural. Cette année il a créé deux nouvelles pièces et rafraichit certaines de l’an dernier qui étaient en voie de disparaitre. Dans les semaines qui ont suivi la tenue du festival, il a adapté quelques pièces de 2014 qui étaient en voie de disparaître.

In September 2010 the Plateau Mont-Royal borough hired artists to create 6 murals on the pillars supporting the Van Horne|Rosemont overpass, on the East side of St-Laurent. These artists were mostly graffiti writers and street artists from Montreal: Stare, Zek, Axe and Fluke for Ashop, Monk.e, Zema and Frank Lam. In May 2013, the project was re-opened and another bunch of artists were given the contract of covering the pillars on the West side of St-Laurent. This second batch included a mix of graffiti writers as well as street and studio artists: Arpi, Peru Dyer, Sino, Sbire, Fanny Aishaa, Pito & Guko (credited as Capital P and Charlie Machete) and the Crazy Apes.

En septembre 2010, l’arrondissement Plateau Mont-Royal a fait réaliser 6 murales sur les piliers soutenant le viaduc Van Horne|Rosemont, à l’est de la rue St-Laurent. This is the original piece by Zema and Frank Lam which was later replaced by the one shown above it.

The 4 walls of the MPC Papers industrial building on the corner of Cabot and Gilmore in the Southwest are sometimes referred to as being legal graffiti walls, but they are not. These walls have been used in the past in the context of various graffiti festivals such as Meeting Of Styles/Can You Rock and are not really for anyone to do their thing. This explains why the pieces here are often quite big in size and they are usually by big names in the local and international graffiti scene.

The spot was in April 2017 the site of an event unofficially titled Scan You Rock, celebrating the work of Scaner, one of Montreal’s best and most respected writers. The pieces created during the latter event are presented in this Scan You Rock post. In September 2018 a huge 100-artist tribute to Scaner was done on the Cabot wall, see all those photos here.

Les 4 murs de l’édifice industriel logeant Les Papiers MPC, situé au coin des rues Cabot et Gilmore dans le sud-ouest de la ville, sont parfois appelés ‘murs légaux’ mais ils ne le sont pas. Ces murs ont par le passé été utilisés dans le cadre de divers festivals du graffiti tels que Meeting Of Styles/Can You Rock et ne sont pas vraiment offerts aux graffeurs qui veulent venir y exercer leur art. Ceci explique pourquoi les pièces qui y sont produites sont souvent de très grande taille et par de grands noms des scènes locale et internationale du graffiti.

La galerie-photo ci-dessous présente les pièces qui y ont été créées de 2013 à 2016. En avril 2017 le site a été choisi pour l’événement Scan You Rock célébrant Scaner, un des meilleurs et des plus respectés artistes graffitis de Montréal. Les pièces créées au cours de cet événement sont présentées dans un article consacré entièrement à Scan You Rock. En septembre 2018 une immense murale hommage à Scaner impliquant une centaine de graffeurs et autres artistes a été créée sur le mur Cabot. Toutes les photos se trouvent ici.

The back alley that runs behind the western side of St-Laurent is one of Montreal’s great hotspots for commissioned and non-commissioned street art. Two stretches of that alley are particularly interesting: the one from Duluth to Des Pins (subject of a different post) and the one from Laurier to St-Viateur which is covered here. Some of this city’s greatest artists have left their mark there in the form of murals, smaller figurative pieces, graffiti, wheatpastes, stencils and of course the unavoidable stickers.

Each segment of the alley has a different feel, so this post is divided accordingly: Laurier to Fairmount, Fairmount to St-Viateur, and above St-Viateur. Pieces were photographed from the summer of 2014 to the summer of 2016.

La ruelle se trouvant derrière le coté ouest de la rue St-Laurent est une des meilleures galeries à ciel ouvert à Montréal. Deux portions de cette ruelle sont particulièrement intéressantes: celle comprise entre Duluth et Des Pins (le sujet d’un article à part) et celle comprise entre les rues Laurier et St-Viateur, que nous traitons ici. Plusieurs parmi les meilleurs artistes à Montréal y ont laissé leur marque (commandée ou non) sous forme de murales et pièces figuratives de plus petite envergure, graffitis, collages, pochoirs, et évidemment les inévitables autocollants.

Mathieu Connery’s sidewalk pieces

For the 2013 edition of the festival, Montreal artist Mathieu Connery painted three pieces in his own abstract and somewhat geometrical style on the sidewalks of St-Laurent. For the 2014 edition, the fading 2013 creations were painted over with new pieces, and seven new ones were added along the St-Laurent axis. Photos in the gallery below that were taken from an elevated position are © Vandalog. The ones taken at ground level are mine.
