Top 10 graffiti

Unlike other categories in this Top 100, this one does not strictly feature my ultimate faves of the year. A lot of the graffiti I love I never had a chance to photograph before it disappeared. I also decided not to include in this list graffiti featured in the context of the Under Pressure festival because then the top 10 would almost just be filled with that. So here’s the top 10 one-off Montreal graffiti that I was able to photograph.

Pask and Mistx graffiti in Ubud, Bali

I must apologize for the lack of posts in the past 3 weeks. I was on vacation in South East Asia and took a near-complete break from the internet. Whilst away I did not expect to find material related to street art in Montreal, but it turns out I was wrong. One of the first graffiti pieces I found in Bali was the one shown below by Montreal’s own Pask and Mistx. It was done in 2009 in the South East area of Ubud, the artistic capital of the island.

Bali was developed by refugee priests and artists, which would explain the incredible amount of temples and art found everywhere on the island. There are temples on every street and each one is decorated with dozens of sculptures and paintings. Amid all this traditional religious art I was on the lookout for urban art (an inbuilt reflex in me), which I found mostly in the form of graffiti. Stencils, paste-ups and stickers were very limitedly found in the more urban areas and murals were rather rare (with the exception of advertisements painted on side-walls of businesses).

The only other Montreal-related material I found were a few stickers (in central Ubud) by French artist Zdey S1tr who has been active in Montreal lately.

Hello, my name is…

texte français ici

helloWith this first blog post I feel that my intentions must be defined. As expressed in the about section (suggested reading!), my first motivation is to share my passion for the Montreal graffiti and street art scenes, but I also aim to increase exposure for its writers and artists, including the new and lesser known ones, present new creations and, given the ephemeral nature or public art, document lost ones.

Wall2Wall Montreal will focus on artists who are based in Montreal or have left a significant mark here. When people think of public art, what comes to mind first and foremost are the big murals. By their sheer size and colours, these works impose themselves on passersby, including those who are generally indifferent to art. But there is so much more to public art than murals. There are also wheatpastes and other smaller paste-ups, stickers, stencils, installations, and especially graffiti which will be given a special place here.

Most posts will fit into one of the following categories:

  • spotlights on the writers and artists
  • open-air galleries, those hot spots in town for great street art and graffiti
  • demolished abandoned buildings that have hosted good graffiti
  • themes and subjects popular with our creators

Finally, because art is a personal experience, this blog will aim to be as objective as possible and avoid criticism or negative value judgements.

Bonjour, mon nom est…

Labrona, rue St-Laurent
Labrona, rue St-Laurent
